Chapter 17
Lissa
Iâm used to soaring high over the land, but today, weâre sticking close to the path. The last few steps at the top of the staircase are so heavily eroded that itâs just dirt, but then the way will become smooth and easy for the people walking below.
As I cling to Clayâs back, I stop looking with my eyes. Instead, I sense with my magic, which can see far more than I can. I visualize a wave of it rolling across the path and mountains, and then pull on the pool of energy deep within me until it follows my will.
Greeting the stones and rivers and trees is so overwhelming that I nearly faint at the responses. The land hasnât felt a queen in so long that itâs eager to respond to me.
Nature answers in a thousand voices, like brushing every inch of the land with my palms while blinded by rapid-fire views every which way. It sends me reeling as I struggle to look for anything important or new.
But at last the energy in the land calms and I can focus on the path, which is clear.
We stay close to the procession. Every now and then, Clay will catch a draft and ride it until we find the back of the train of villagers, then swoop low overhead.
The first time he does it, it causes panic, but by the second time theyâre prepared. Thereâs a lot less inventive swearing. The horses arenât happy about Clay, so I try to guide the winds to carry his scent away instead of straight down to them.
The minutes slide by into hours as we fly ahead to scout out the way, then rejoin them, all the while keeping our eyes and ears and magic keenly focused on any sign of landslides.
The mountain peaks squeeze together on either side of the pass, just at the steepest section of path. Clay only has a few feet of clearance. Itâs even narrower below, so he couldnât land without folding his wings and dropping from the sky.
And thatâs when blue fire flashes overhead and the mountains to either side cry out to my magic in silent agony.
The sight of blue fire sends shouts and cries through the string of people below. Fear quickly turns to panicked confusion as they start trying to turn back. But thereâs nowhere to take shelter, and no way they can all get out of the narrow valley without trampling each other.
I raise my voice to scream with all my might. âDuck!â
They huddle together, heads down and arms over their heads as rocks start to scramble down the sides of the mountains.
âClay!â I cry out, leaning over the dragonâs neck as I speak to the elemental dragon. Heâs brimming with power, and I have to pray itâs enough. âHold the mountain!â I command him.
The dragon banks sharply, swooping up toward the source of the fireâjust out of sight beyond one mountain peak. At the same time, his voice booms out in a roar that rumbles through my thighs and across the valley.
